Yerevan is one of those cities that surprises you. You arrive expecting ancient churches and Soviet architecture — and you find a living, breathing capital that somehow manages to be 2,800 years old and completely contemporary at the same time. Pink tuff stone buildings glow at sunset. Rooftop bars fill up by 10pm. And Mount Ararat watches over all of it from across the border, close enough to feel personal.
Here is everything worth knowing before you go.
Start at the Soul of the City — Matenadaran
If there is one place that explains Armenia before you see anything else, it is the Matenadaran. This is the world's largest repository of ancient Armenian manuscripts — illuminated texts, scientific treatises, philosophical works, some dating back over a thousand years. The building sits at the top of Mashtots Avenue like a fortress of memory. Give it an hour. You will leave understanding why Armenians are so quietly proud of their history.
The Cascade — Yerevan's Outdoor Living Room
The Cascade is the city's most iconic landmark and it is completely free. A giant staircase of limestone and gardens climbing up the hillside, lined with outdoor sculptures from the Cafesjian Art Center collection. Walk up for the view of Ararat. Stop at any of the terraces for coffee. On the way up, look out for works by Fernando Botero and Lynn Chadwick sitting casually between the fountains.
At the top, the Aznavour Cultural Center hosts regular concerts and exhibitions — check what's on during your visit.
Museums Worth Your Time
Yerevan has more museums than most visitors expect, and several of them are genuinely world-class:
History Museum of Armenia on Republic Square — covers everything from prehistoric Armenia to the 20th century. The golden artifacts alone are worth the entrance fee.
Erebuni Fortress — a real Urartian fortress from 782 BC sitting on a hill on the edge of the city. Combine it with the adjacent museum for context.
Sergei Parajanov Museum — the house-museum of the legendary Soviet-Armenian filmmaker is unlike any museum you have visited. Chaotic, personal, visionary. Non-negotiable for anyone with any interest in art or cinema.
Saryan House-Museum — the studio and home of Martiros Saryan, whose vibrant, sun-drenched paintings define how Armenia sees its own colors.
Ararat Brandy Factory
Armenia's brandy tradition is serious and centuries old. The ARARAT Brandy Factory offers guided tours of the production process, the aging cellars, and a tasting of reserves that go back decades. It is one of the most atmospheric experiences in the city — the smell of aging oak barrels alone is worth the visit. Book in advance, especially in summer.
Republic Square in the Evening
Do not leave Yerevan without spending an evening at Republic Square. The singing fountains perform after dark to classical and Armenian music — a light and water show that somehow never feels touristy. The surrounding pink tuff stone buildings are lit up, the terraces are full, and the energy of the city is at its best. It costs nothing and it is unforgettable.
For Families
Yerevan is very child-friendly. The Yerevan Zoo has been significantly upgraded in recent years. Yerevan Park (formerly Fantasy World) has rides and attractions. In summer, the water parks on the outskirts of the city are a popular escape from the heat. Victory Park has a cable car with panoramic views — children love it, adults love it more.
Getting Around
Yerevan is walkable in the centre. For longer distances, GG is the local ride-hailing app and works very well. Taxis are cheap by European standards. If you want to explore outside the city — Khor Virap, Garni, Geghard, Lake Sevan — a private transfer or guided day tour is by far the most comfortable option.
📩 Need a transfer or a day tour from Yerevan? Jan Armenia Tours & Travel has been handling it since 2015 — private, flexible, English-speaking.
Yerevan rewards the curious. Give it at least two full days — more if you can. The city has a way of making you want to stay longer than you planned. Most visitors do.
