Overview

WINTER GROUP TOUR:  Khor Virap Monastery, Noravank Monastery,  Birds' cave and Wine tasting

Embark on an unforgettable journey through Armenia’s vibrant past as you explore Khor Virap Monastery, discover the stunning Noravank Monastery, venture into the fascinating Birds’ Cave, and enjoy a delightful wine-tasting experience.

Khor Virap is one of Armenia’s most beautiful sites, located in the Ararat Valley with a stunning view of Mount Ararat. It is famous for being the place where Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 13 years before helping Armenia become the first country in the world to adopt Christianity in 301 AD. The monastery is also a major pilgrimage site and a symbol of Armenia’s spiritual heritage. Today, visitors can even descend into the underground pit where Saint Gregory was held, making the experience both historically powerful and deeply moving.

Noravank Monastery is nestled among stunning, steep red rocks on the edge of a winding gorge. Founded in the 12th century on the site of earlier structures, the complex is a masterpiece of medieval Armenian architecture. One of its most remarkable features is the famous “God” relief, created by the renowned Armenian sculptor Momik, which showcases his extraordinary artistic talent and adds to the spiritual and cultural significance of the monastery. In the 13th century, Noravank became an important center for manuscript production, hosting a school where scholars and artists preserved and illuminated sacred texts. The monastery was closely connected with the noble Orbelian family, who contributed greatly to its development and splendor.

The Noravank Monastery can be reached through the stunning Nishik Gorge, a dramatic canyon recognized for its natural beauty and often considered for UNESCO listing. As you travel through the gorge, you will be surrounded by towering cliffs and winding paths, with breathtaking views that lead directly to the magnificent Noravank complex, perfectly framed by the red rock formations.

Armenian winemaking has a rich history dating back over 6,000 years. The famous Areni-1 Cave, located in the Vayots Dzor region, is considered the world’s oldest known winery. Archaeologists discovered ancient wine presses, fermentation vats, and grape seeds in the cave, providing remarkable evidence of Armenia’s long-standing viticulture tradition. This site highlights Armenia’s pivotal role in the history of winemaking and offers a fascinating glimpse into the country’s ancient culture.

In Areni, we will enjoy tasting wine made from the local Areni Noir grape, a unique Armenian variety known for its rich flavor and deep color. The vineyards here have been cultivated for thousands of years, continuing a winemaking tradition that dates back to the ancient Areni-1 Cave, where the world’s oldest winery was discovered. Visitors will have the opportunity to sample a variety of wines, learn about traditional Armenian winemaking techniques, and experience the deep connection between Armenia’s landscape, culture, and viticulture. This tasting is not just about wine—it’s a journey through history and the flavors of the region.
