The Amberd fortress, Saghmosavank monastery, Yerevan walking tour

Duration: 9 hours / Distance: 140 km

The tour will start with a visit to the Amberd fortress, a medieval Armenian fortress located on the slopes of Mount Aragats. Guests will then visit Saghmosavank Monastery, which dates back to the 13th century and is known for its unique architecture and stunning location overlooking the Kasagh River gorge. The tour will end with a walking tour of Yerevan, where guests can explore the city’s many attractions and learn about its rich history and culture.

14:00 – 15:00 Transfer from Yerevan to Amberd

15:00-16:00 Fortress Amberd The tour will take you to the Amberd fortress, located on the slopes of Mount Aragats – the highest peak in Armenia. In the 13th century, the Zakaryan noble family started the liberation of Armenia from the Seljuk Turks from this very fortress. The name “Amberd” originates from the fact that the fortress is located at the altitude of 2300m above the sea level, translating as “Fortress in the Clouds”.

16:00 – 17:00 Transfer from Amberd to Saghmosavank

17:00-17:30 Saghmosavank Monastery The monastic complex included in this daily tour date back to the 13th century. Saghmosavank is translated as the monastery of psalms. According to the legend, the psalm singing of Gregory the Illuminator was heard for several miles, when he asserted in the caves underneath the church. It was also famous for its medieval manuscripts and book-repository.

Garni Temple – Lavash baking and tasting – Symphony of stones - Lake Sevan, Sevanavank monastery

Duration: 6-7 hours / Distance: 90 km

The tour will start with a visit to Garni Temple, followed by a visit to the Symphony of Stones, a natural wonder located in the Garni gorge. Guests will then have the opportunity to learn how to bake traditional Armenian bread, Lavash, and make Armenian BBQ. The tour will continue with a visit to Lake Sevan, where guests can enjoy the scenic views and visit Sevanavank monastery, located on the shores of the lake. The tour will end with return to Yerevan, where guests can explore the city’s many attractions on their own.

09:45-10:30 Arch of Yeghishe Charents The first stop is near Charent’s arch, named in honor of Armenian poet Eghishe Charents, who loved this place and frequently visited it.

10:30-11:00 Transfer from Arch of Yeghishe Charents to Garni temple

11:00-12:00 Garni temple

Garni Temple (77 A.D.) is another historical site included in this tour. It is the only standing heathen temple in the whole post-Soviet area. The temple gracefully stands on a high plateau overlooking the Azat river gorge. The surrounding area itself is incredibly beautiful. The greek-roman bathhouse with the mosaic, made out of 30,000 pieces of natural stones, as well as the ruins of the royal palace, will take you to 3rd century A.D.

12:00-12:30 Transfer from Garni temple to Geghard Monastery

12:30-13:30 Geghard Monastery

The next stop will be the Monastery complex of Geghard. St. Geghard symbolizes the lance with which the Roman centurion pierced Jesus after the crucifixion. Later the lance was brought to Armenia and kept in Geghard Monastery for 5 centuries. The complex presents Armenia of the 13th century, which is considered the Golden Age of the country’s architecture. However, the most astonishing part of this complex is its architectural solution churches drilled into the solid rock constructed following the rules of Armenian architecture. Geghard Monastery is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Not far from the temple of Garni (about 10minutes’ walk), there is a cozy local restaurant with an amazing view of the temple, where you can relax and take part in the master-class of tasting freshly baked lavash – traditional Armenian flatbread.

Khorovats is an Armenian barbecue. The meat may be marinated before grilling, but it does not have to be. It can be made with lamb, pork, beef, chicken, fish, or even veal. This is generally a dish reserved for "festive occasions".

In the province of Kotayk, not far from the village Garni is situated one of the most well-known and beautiful natural monuments of Armenia – Symphony of Stones. It is said that this natural monument is the result of the collapse of the volcanic rocks.

We have placed the Sevanavank monastery as the first spot to visit near Lake Sevan. You will be surprised to know that, firstly, the monastery was constructed on the Southern shoreside of a small island. Lake Sevan is a spectacular art of nature that will hypnotise you in its beauty. The lake is only about an hour away from the capital Yerevan. The mountains that surround it make it a more attractive destination to visit. On the other hand, the Sevanavank monastery was constructed by princess Mariam in honour of her deceased husband in the 9th century. This exciting place was also the home of Amenaprkich, all saviours, the Khachkars of Armenia.

Purchase, Changing & Cancellation policy

You can buy this service in full or book it by paying 30% of the total amount. In case of booking, you will pay the rest of the cost of your service online before providing the service (www.janarmenia.com) or in cash / non-cash at the organization's office.

In case of changing the date of service, no fee will be charged if you inform the organization at least 48 hours before the service is provided, and in case of later notification on change - 10% of the total cost will be charged. It is possible to change the direction or type of service only at least 24 hours before the service is to be provided. In this case, the final calculation is made, the corresponding changes are made, if possible.

In the case of extreme weather conditions or force majeure, the entity has the right to change, reduce or cancel the approved purchase. In case of cancellation by the organization, you are offered another equivalent service.

Without any penalty purchase cancellation is available at least 48 hours in advance. After that, the whole value of the service is non-refundable in case of purchase, cancellation, as well as without the consent of the service provider. Payment methods
  1. Bank transfer is the transfer of an corresponding amount to the bank account of the organization. You can pay in drams, rubles, dollars and euros.
  2. Online payment is the payment made through the official website of the organization. At the moment it is possible to make a payment with Visa / Master cards of any exchange rate.
  3. Card payment is the payment via Visa / Master card through the POS terminal in the organization's office. The amount of the excursions/service is presented in Armenian drams, but you can pay with any exchange rate card (your bank changes the exchange rate of the corresponding amount). The organization does NOT CHARGE extra amount during card payment.
  4. Cash payment is the payment at the office of the organization by cash. Payments are accepted only in Armenian drams. There is a bank and ATM next to the organization's office.
