The arch of “Yeghishe Charents,” Garni Temple, Geghard monastery, the gorge of "Symphony of stones", Lake Sevan, Sevanavank Monastery
This captivating tour will take you through Armenia's fascinating Pagan history and explore the later growth and spread of Christianity throughout the country.
Our first stop is near Charent’s Arch, named after the famous Armenian poet Eghishe Charents, who adored this place and often visited it.
Next, we’ll visit the Geghard Monastery Complex, where St. Geghard is associated with the lance that pierced Jesus’s side during the crucifixion. The relic was brought to Armenia and kept at Geghard for five centuries. The monastery complex is a reflection of 13th-century Armenia, a time considered the Golden Age of Armenian architecture. The most striking feature of this site is the churches carved directly into the solid rock, designed following traditional Armenian architectural principles. Geghard is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Our journey continues to the Garni Temple (77 A.D.), the only remaining pagan temple in the entire post-Soviet region. The temple stands majestically on a high plateau, offering stunning views of the Azat River gorge. The surrounding area is equally breathtaking. You’ll also explore the Greek-Roman bathhouse with a mosaic made from 30,000 pieces of natural stone and the ruins of a royal palace, transporting you back to the 3rd century A.D..
Next, we head to one of Armenia’s most breathtaking natural wonders—Lake Sevan, often called the "Pearl of Armenia". Situated at an altitude of 1,900 meters above sea level, it is one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in the world. The vast blue waters of Sevan stretch as far as the eye can see, reflecting the sky and surrounding mountains, creating a mesmerizing and serene landscape.
Perched on a rocky peninsula overlooking the lake is Sevanavank Monastery, a masterpiece of medieval Armenian architecture. Originally built in 874 A.D. by Princess Mariam, the monastery was once a spiritual retreat for monks seeking isolation. The two surviving churches—Surp Arakelots (Holy Apostles) and Surp Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God)—stand as silent witnesses to centuries of history.
