The history museum of Armenia keeps the national collection – about 400.000 objects. The History museum was founded in 1919 in the First Republic. The museum keeps the national collection, which are exhibited in the departments of archeology, ethnography, numismatics and contemporary history. The items create a complete picture of the history and culture of Armenia, ranging from prehistoric times to the XV century.
In the museum you can find the cultural communications with Old East (Egypt, Syria, Iran, Rome, Byzantium). Collections are periodically updated with new artifacts found during excavations on the territory of Armenia.
In the museum collections of the tools from the Paleolithic and Neolithic area (IV-II centuries BC) are introduced. The museum owns a collection of the most ancient evidence of the history of transport, 15th-14th century BC wooden carts and chariots, excavated from Lchashen, and their miniature models in bronze, owns a rich collection of Armenian coins etc. In this museum you can see the oldest shoe in the world, discovered in the Areni Vayots Dzor. Shoe was created 5637-5387 years ago.
The museum possesses the cuneiform inscription of 782 BC about the foundation of the city of Erebuni (Yerevan), by the Urartian king Argishti. The wooden unique decorative door of the St. Arakelots Monastery which was founded nine centuries ago is currently located in this museum.
