This 2 days tour in Armenia will take you to the amazing historical and spiritual places where you will get acquainted with the most interesting stories and legends, Armenian architecture in different ages. First stop is Lake Sevan. The high-mountainous Lake Sevan is the “pearl of Armenia”. Lake Sevan – located at an altitude of 1,900 m above sea level in the center of the Armenian highland, 63 km northeast of the Armenian capital of Yerevan city and is the largest of the Caucasus lakes. Then in Dilijan the betaking forests will surround you. We will also explore the Goshavank Monastery – located in the middle of Goshavank village with wonderful nature. And the last stop is well-known travel destination in Armenia – Hagharstin Monastery – its beauty is breathtaking unreal. Haghartsin monastery was built in the 10th century by the Bagratuni dynasty. It was built in the place of pagan temple. This amazing complex includes 4 churches and cross-stones (khachkars). During your second day-trip you will discover Haghpat and Sanahin monasteries, included in UNESCO list. The monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin are located within 20 minutes of drive from each other. Day 1
Stop 1: 10:00
Lake Sevan

The high-mountainous Lake Sevan is the “pearl of Armenia”. Lake Sevan – located at an altitude of 1,900 m above sea level in the center of the Armenian highland, 63 km northeast of the Armenian capital of Yerevan city and is the largest of the Caucasus lakes. From all sides, Sevan is surrounded by mountain ranges, offering a stunning view of alpine lake.. The lake is famous for its purest fresh water, and pure mountain air has a beneficial effect on health.

Stop 2: 11:00
Sevanavank

The monastery complex Sevanavank is located on the peninsula of Sevan. In 305, it was founded by St. Gregory the Illuminator, who built the church on the place of a pagan temple. In the 9th century the princes of Syunik made Sevan a point of their suppurt. In 874 the wife of the Syunik prince Vassak and the daughter of the king Ashot Bagratuni – Mariam built here two churches – St. Arakeloc and St. Astvatcatcin. They are rich in various wood-carved capitals, a aprt of which is kept in the Armenia State Museum of History and in the Art Gallery of St. Petersburg (Hermitage). In 1869 a spiritual school opened in the complex. On the top of the mountain of the island the remnants of the church with a domed hall are preserved. The teritory of the cloister is rich in khachqars (cross-stones).

Haghartsin Monastery

Haghartsin is a spiritual and cultural center of medieval Armenia, located 12 km from Dilijan, surrounded by thick woods, beautiful landscapes. It is considered to be a unique example of architecture and nature harmony. The Haghartsin monument is located on a plateau surrounded by forested mountains, far beyond the settlements, with remarkable architectural value monuments and over hundreds of inscriptions, which contain rich material on the socio-political history of medieval Armenia. Together with Goshavank, Haghpat and Varagavanq, the Haghartsin monastery participated in a long and stubborn struggle for the promotion of education in the country and the preservation of the Armenian Church’s religion. Historical sources, however, give very poor information about this remarkable monument. The exact date of Haghartsin’s monastery construction is unknown. It is only known that in the middle of the 12th century it already existed. Haghartsin monastery is connected with the name of Khachatur Taronatsi, a prominent figure of the medieval, virtuous and well-educated, musician. During his leadership, Haghartsin monastery flourished, new constructions were built, and a remarkable monastic school was opened. He died and buried in front of the Cathoghike Church in Haghartsin monastery.St. Astvatsatsin Church is the main and largest church of the monastery, with a rectangular cross-country structure with a square plan. Facing stone is made of blue basalt and yellow limestone.In Haghartsin monastery complex there is also St. Grigor church, St. Cathoghike church, St. Stepanos church, a refectory etc.

Goshavank

Goshavank is one of the most prominent monasteries of the Aghstev river valley. Getik monastery was in its place in the 12th century, which was completely destroyed by the earthquake. The foundation of Goshavank’s monastery is related to the medieval thinker, lawmaker, author of the fables and the law book ”Datastanagirq”, Mkhitar Gosh. The monastery founded by Mkhitar Gosh was originally called New Getik monastery, but after his death it was renamed Goshavank. The formation of the complex took place in the 12th-13th centuries. Goshavank monastery complex is composed of St. Astvatsatsin church of with its simple architecture, St. Gregory Church with a smaller volume of the same composition, St. Gregory the Illuminator Church with the ornamental frescoes on the exterior, and the library-belfry building. Goshavank is rich in unique artistic stone artifacts and magnificent khachkars (armenian cross – stone). Goshavank was one of the most reputable centers of medieval spiritual culture and literature. Jurisprudence, history, theology, philosophy, art of writing, and music were taught in the catechism. Many prominent figures of the Armenian spiritual culture studied here, who later founded monastery schools in other places. The significant monuments of Goshavank are the real gems of the of the most famous period of Armenian medieval architecture, the pride of the Armenian people.

Sanahin Old Bridge

Sanahin Bridge is one of the most significant architectural constructions of medieval Armenia. It is located in Alaverdi city of Lori region, above the Debed River. In 12th century it was built under the auspices of Vaneni, sister of Zakare and Ivane Zakaryan, in honor of her husband king Abas Kyurikyan, who passed early. The bridge is located above narrow and fertile banks of the River Debed flow. The basalt bridge with its bewitching outlines, type of stone and color combines with the picturesque surrounding becoming its inseparable treasure. Not far from the bridge Sanahin and Haghpat monasteries as well as Kobayr are located.

Sanahin Monastery

Sanahin Monastery complex is located on the right bank of the Debed river, in the village of Sanahin. The complex was founded by Ashot III Bagratuni in 966. Since the end of the 10th century it became an administrative center and a burial vault of the Kurikyan dynasty. In X-XI centuries, the monastery was a major cultural center: a university and a rich library were founded. At the end of the 12th century the complex was subordinated to the ruling of the Zakaryan dynasty.

Haghpat Monastery

Haghpat Monastery is one of the largest and most important monasteries in Armenia. The monastery on the high plateau is bordered by the peaks of the hills Surb Luys and Terunakan on one side, on the other side by the Lori fortress and in the Sagidzor canyon where flowing streams of the rivers Saghik and Kayan. Founded in 976, the complex of architectural structures consists of religious and secular buildings surrounded by towers and fences.

Amberd fortress

There is a medieval fortress Amberd on the southern slopes of the Mount Aragats, away from the hectic cities. It stands on the rocky cliff on the height of 2100 meters protected from two sides with deep gorges at the junction of rivers Amberd and Arkashen. This unique sight is located 50km from Yerevan. There is only one serpentine road leading to it that passes through mountains. That is why it is impossible to get there in winter when everything is covered in snow. The history of Amberd goes back to the 7th century when Armenian princes Kamsarakan started there construction of the fortress. With the time, a small outpost turned into a well-protected fortress. However, the Kamsarakans had to pass this strategic point to another Armenian noble family Pahlavuni, who made it their residence. The great commander Vagram Pahlavuni, who lived in the 11th century, ordered to fortify the complex of Amberd and build there a church later named in his honor – Vagramashen. Despite excellent protection of Amberd, it was invaded by Seljuks coming from Central Asia in the end of the 11th century. Later, in the 13th century, Mongols captured and destroyed this beautiful fortress. No later than a century, Amberd was reconstructed and served as an outpost for several hundreds of years, however today it has only its church preserved. The architecture of Amberd is simple. Walls of the fortress are made of massive basalt tiles that once served to protect from shells and siege weapons. In some places, thickness of walls reaches 4 meters. Foundations of construction and few walls had been preserved inside the fortress. Church Vagramashen was built in 1026 and reached our days practically in its original state. Church architecture is ascetic, as well as the entire fortress and its only exquisite detail is the southern door.
